Your free 7ot.app email: a private inbox in MoLock

MoLock 3.0 can give you an email address of your own on 7ot.app, free. Here is how to choose a good handle, how the inbox works, and, honestly, what its encryption does and does not cover.

Why a separate address is worth having

Most people use one email address for everything: the bank, the family group, a newsletter they signed up for years ago and the shop they bought one cable from. Over the years that address ends up in dozens of databases, and every one of them is a door. When one of those sites leaks or sells its list, the spam, the fake delivery notices and the "your account is locked" messages all arrive in the same inbox as your real life.

A second address does not fix the internet, but it gives you a choice. Your main address can stay with the people and services that truly matter, and everything else can go somewhere you control and can watch. MoLock 3.0 adds that second address to something you already use every day: your MoLock account.

A second address does not fix the internet. It gives you a choice about who gets to reach your real inbox.

Choosing a good handle

Your address is handle@7ot.app, and the handle is the part you pick. The rules are simple:

  • 3 to 24 characters, using lowercase letters, digits, dots, dashes and underscores.
  • Some names are reserved for the service itself, such as admin, support, root, postmaster, abuse, noreply, security and billing. If a name is taken or reserved, you are asked to pick another.

A few tips for a handle you will be happy with:

  • Make it easy to say. "sara.k" is easier to dictate than "s_a-r4k". Dots read naturally; dashes and underscores are easy to mix up when spoken aloud.
  • Keep it neutral if you will use it for sign-ups. A handle that is not your full name gives a shop or a forum a little less about you.
  • Avoid your birth year. It is a small detail, but it is also a common answer to security questions.

Creating it: two ways, one minute

The address is optional. You can create it when you first set up MoLock, where the installer offers a step for it, or at any time later from your dashboard.

  1. Open the mail step. In the setup wizard, choose to create an address. Or sign in at your dashboard and press Create my 7ot.app email.
  2. Type a handle. If it is too short, uses a character that is not allowed, or is already taken, you are asked to pick another.
  3. Confirm. The address is yours, and the inbox appears in the MoLock window on your linked PCs and at 7ot.app/me/mail.
  4. Choose your notifications. Decide whether new mail should appear as a toast on the PC, and whether those toasts may show a preview.

Reading and writing mail

There are two places to use your inbox, and they show the same mailbox.

  • On your PC, the MoLock window has a mail view with Inbox, Sent and a compose button, in the same graphite and amber look as the rest of the app.
  • In any browser, sign in and go to 7ot.app/me/mail. It works on your phone too.

The folders are the familiar ones: Inbox, Sent, Drafts, Spam, Trash and Archive. You can reply, forward, attach files, star a message, mark it as read or unread, move it between folders and delete it. Search runs on your own device, over senders and subjects that have already been unlocked there, so your search terms are not sent off to be matched on the server.

Spam filtering is built in. Incoming mail is checked for signs of trouble, such as a message that fails the sender's identity checks, a sender on a known list of bad actors, or the usual patterns of junk. Anything suspicious goes to Spam rather than your inbox, so a glance at that folder now and then is a good habit. Mail sent to an address that does not exist on 7ot.app is refused, so a typo bounces back to its sender instead of vanishing.

Plus addresses: one inbox, many doors

This is what makes a 7ot.app address useful every day. Add a plus sign and any word after your handle, and the mail still reaches you:

  • name+shop@7ot.app for online stores,
  • name+news@7ot.app for newsletters,
  • name+travel@7ot.app for bookings.

You do not need to create these in advance. Make one up at the moment you fill in a form. Every message arrives in the same inbox, still addressed to the tag you used. That gives you two things for free:

  • You learn who shared your address. If mail to name+bookshop@7ot.app starts arriving from a company you have never heard of, you know exactly where it came from.
  • You can tell real mail from fake mail. A "bank" message sent to your newsletter tag is not from your bank, whatever its logo says.

How your mail is protected, and where it is not

Email is an old system, and it was not designed for privacy. We want to be precise about what MoLock adds and what nobody can add.

When mail arrives, it comes across the internet as ordinary email, from the sender's provider to ours. Like any email service, ours receives the message as it was sent so that it can check it, filter spam and deliver it to the right box. Then, on arrival, the message is sealed with a key that only your account holds and stored that way. From that moment the service keeps data it cannot open: not to read it later, not to scan it for advertising, and not if someone gets hold of the stored files.

When you open your mail, it is unlocked on your PC or in your own browser after you sign in, the same way the rest of your end-to-end encrypted data is.

When you send mail, it leaves as ordinary email and travels to the recipient's provider, which stores and handles it under its own rules. Your message to a friend at another provider is as private as that provider makes it.

Unlocking only on your PC or in your signed-in browserThe trip from 7ot.app to the person you write to

Administrators of the service can see that an account has a mail address, how much storage it uses and how much it sends, which is needed to run the service and stop abuse. They cannot see what your stored mail says.

Notifications that know when to stay quiet

When the MoLock app is running, new mail shows a toast on the PC, "New email from …", and the tray icon shows a badge with the number of unread messages. Notifications on the web and on your phone can come through your browser's push notifications as well, chosen per device in your notification preferences, next to the bot and email channels.

  • Focus comes first. During a focus session that quiets notifications, mail toasts stay quiet too. The badge still counts, so nothing is lost.
  • Previews are your call. By default a notification says who wrote. A short hint of the subject appears only if you allow previews, which is worth leaving off on a PC that others can see.

The same address also receives MoLock's own messages to you: welcome, address checks, a sign-in from a new browser, a changed password, a newly linked PC, plan reminders and, if you choose the email channel, privacy alerts. These come from MoLock <noreply@7ot.app> in English or Arabic. A message claiming to be from MoLock that comes from any other address is not from us.

Storage, size and sending limits

Mail lives in the same storage as your files and session recordings, so it counts toward one shared total. These are the defaults; the numbers on your plan are always shown in your dashboard.

FreePremium
Your 7ot.app addressIncludedIncluded
Messages sent per day20500
Total storage (files, mail, recordings)500 MB20 GB
Largest message received25 MB25 MB

If you reach today's sending limit, MoLock tells you calmly and the counter resets the next day. If your storage fills up, new mail cannot be accepted until you make room, so empty Trash and Spam now and then, and save large attachments elsewhere before deleting the messages. Premium raises the limits; it comes as a serial from the MoLock owner, and Premium and serials, explained covers how that works.

Fair use keeps the address worth having

An address on 7ot.app is only useful if the rest of the world trusts mail from 7ot.app. That is why sending has a daily limit, and why unusual sending is slowed down automatically. The terms of service are short on this point: no spam, no bulk mailing to people who did not ask for it, no phishing and nothing that pretends to be someone else. Accounts that break these rules can be warned or suspended.

Even then, one thing does not change: suspending an account stops cloud features such as mail, but never stops the protection on your PC. Your screen still locks the way you set it up.

That is the whole idea: an address that is yours, an inbox in the app you already open every day, and mail that sits sealed once it arrives. Read about everything else that is new in MoLock 3.0, or open the mail page to see it all on one screen.
